Fishing for Spelling Words

Today we tried a new and fun way to do our spelling. We went fishing for spelling words!  Your kids will love this activity. It’s the perfect way to make spelling more fun!
How to Play Fishing For Spelling Words:
I filled the bath tub half way with warm water and added a few drops of blue food coloring into it just for the fun of it- this is definitely not necessary. Next, we dumped in all of our magnetic alphabet letters.
My kids hunted around and found a big stick outside.  We turned the stick into a fishing pole by tying on some ribbon and then tying a magnet onto the end.  You may want to secure the magnet with a little hot glue.
We brought our spelling and sight word lists into the bathroom with us. The kids had to fish out the letters to spell their words. Then, they wrote the words on a small dry erase board. This was an exciting spelling lesson for my kids.
Another fun variation on this fishing for spelling words game, is to pull the curtain closed so they can’t see the letters as they fish. One child can be behind the curtain helping them get letters if it is tricky for them. Â Have them fish out four or five letters and see what words they can spell with those letters.
You and your kids have got to try this fishing for spelling words activity! Â It will make your spelling lessons so much more exciting. I promise!
