Toddler Story Collage

My little 2-year-old sometimes makes school time VERY difficult.  I think many of you can understand that.  If I let him run free while we do school, it takes the rest of the day to clean the messes he made.  If I spend a few minutes on meaningful activities for him between teaching and reading to my older two kids, it seems to go much better.

We did a fun little activity this week with magazine pictures that I call a story collage.  We looked through a magazine together and when he saw a picture that he liked, I cut it out.

He was thrilled and had so much fun picking out his favorites!

Then we glued them onto a piece of construction paper to make it into a little picture story.

Once the pictures were all glued on to the page, I told him a little made-up story from his collage.  He loves this picture that he created and carries it around telling the story we made up.  I think most of all he is proud that he has made something!
I thought it was sweet that the pictures he liked best were about food and family.

  1. Thanks for posting this! I’ve been wondering the past few days how people do both (I have a 4yo in Kindergarten & a 1yo.) She is not wanting to sit and color any more during school like she had wanted to before. This is a great idea!! I’ll have to store it away for later use 🙂

  2. I really like this idea. My toddler was getting unbearable during school time, so I do “tot school” with him now. I love the pictures your little guy picked out. You can tell he loves his family. 🙂

  3. This is a GREAT idea! My kiddos would love to do this. I can picture them cutting out all of the snacks they don’t normally get for their collages 😉
