The Great Wall of Krispies

We have started school again and did a very fun project to go along with our history studies this week.  We are finishing up volume 1 of The Story of the World and are learning about ancient China.  The chapter was about the Great wall of China.  I thought it would be really fun to make a model of it using rice krispy treats (with some cheerios mixed in).  It is probably not the most accurate rendition, but we had so much fun making it... and eating it!  I love teaching in a hands-on way, and my kids always remember it better, too.

I made a double batch and poured it into a 9x13 pan and two bread pans- both greased.  Then I just cut theme into strips- the 9x13 pan, I cut into three strips, the bread pans I used mostly as the battlements.  We lined the top with mini marshmallows for the top part of the wall.  Look at those happy faces- waiting to take a bite!

Want a few resources for studying ancient China?  Here are some books we have enjoyed:

The Nightingale by Hans Christian Anderson

The Empty Pot by Demi

Ten Suns: A Chinese Legend - retold by Eric A. Kimmel

  3. This is fantastic! We're also finishing up SOTW 1, but I'm thinking maybe we'll build Hadrian's Wall. What a cool, memorable idea you've come up with here!

  4. Very interesting. I have that series, but we haven't started it yet. I may have to try something like this with my grandchildren. Thank you.
