Camping with kids can be one of the most memorable family adventures. Fresh air, campfires, starry skies, and time away from screens make camping a wonderful way for kids to connect with nature.
But preparing for a camping trip with children can feel overwhelming if you’re not sure what to bring or how to keep kids busy outdoors. That’s why I created this family camping checklist and activity pack to help make camping with kids easier and more fun.
Inside the printable you’ll find a camping packing list, activity ideas, a nature scavenger hunt bingo game, and a camping journal page to make your next trip even more memorable.

Are you campers? Â Where is your favorite place to camp with your family?

This photo is from one of our camping trips to Payson Lakes in Utah a few years back. Doesn’t it just look like a postcard?
A few weeks ago I took the kids camping and it was such a wonderful experience for them. While we were getting ready, the kids wanted to know if we were bringing the iPad with us. I laughed and said no—we were definitely not bringing electronics along.
My kids really don’t use it that much, but apparently they couldn’t imagine life without it! They kept asking what we would do while camping.
Once we arrived, though, they never even thought about the electronics we left behind. They were too busy exploring, playing, and enjoying nature. By the end of the trip they were already planning our next camping adventure.

Fun Camping Activities for Kids
One of the best parts about camping with kids is how many fun things there are to do outdoors. Without screens and electronics, kids naturally start exploring and playing.
Here are some favorite camping activities for kids.
1. Campfire Songs and Stories
Bring along a list of favorite songs, poems, or stories to enjoy around the campfire. Kids love singing together and hearing stories under the stars.
2. Flashlight Tag
Flashlight tag is a classic camping game. Bring several flashlights and play tag in the dark around the campsite.
3. Stargazing
The stars are much brighter away from city lights. Bring a star guide and try to identify constellations together.
4. Nature Scavenger Hunt
Create a list of things for kids to find while exploring.
Ideas include:
• animal tracks
• different leaves
• insects
• rocks
• wildflowers
• birds
You can also use the Nature Scavenger Hunt Bingo Game included in the printable pack.
5. Listen to Nature
Have kids sit quietly and listen for sounds around them. Try to identify birds, insects, wind in the trees, or other nature sounds.
6. Capture the Flag
If you’re camping with a group, capture the flag is always a hit with kids.
7. Fishing
If you’re camping near water, bring fishing poles or small nets and let kids try catching fish.

8. Hiking
Check ahead of time for nearby trails. Exploring new trails and natural areas is one of the best parts of camping.
9. S’mores
No camping trip is complete without s’mores. Make sure the kids get a chance to roast marshmallows and enjoy this classic camping treat.
10. Toys and Games
Bring along a few simple items like:
• card games
• a frisbee
• a ball
Kids don’t need much to stay entertained outdoors.
11. Exploring and Observing Nature
Let kids spend time exploring nature. Bring magnifying glasses, sketchbooks, cameras, or jars for observing insects.
12. Teach Basic Camping Skills
Camping is a great opportunity for kids to learn practical outdoor skills.
You can teach them how to:
• help set up a tent
• safely build a fire (with supervision)
• cook over a fire
• follow camping safety rules
Kids love feeling capable and involved.
If you aren’t brave enough to venture into the big out doors for real camping- why not try it out for the first time in your back yard- or even safer- your living room! The kids will still love it!!
