Spring Has Spring!

... and we are loving it!  Our weather this year has been crazy.  We had one of the mildest winters I can ever remember.  But, it has probably snowed more in March than any other month.  After it snows it all melts & warms back up to the 60's and 70's.  So we are having snowstorms, then outside play weather all in the same week.  I guess that's kinda how spring goes.  So we've been taking advantage of both.

Yesterday we enjoyed a very warm day.  We talked about Spring and all of the wonderful things about it.  We went on a long walk to the park, we made little birds in a nest, planted seeds, weeded the garden, and read some books about Spring.

Here is a fun & simple little Spring Bird Craft:

Spring bird craft

You will need a paper bag, some shredded paper- green and tan, and a bird template to color and cut out.

Roll the paper bag down all the way to the bottom to look like a nest.  Fill with some shredded paper to look like a nest-like filling.  Color and cut out your little bird to put into the nest. Cut out a couple of little eggs to add to the nest, if you'd like.

That's it.  Super simple & very cute.  We happen to have a little cardboard castle hanging around right now.  The kids thought it was the perfect spot for the bird's nest to rest.  (Or bird is named Jewel- like in Rio)

Want some great books to extend the activity? Here are some fun books on birds and Spring!

Are You My Mother? P.D. Eastman

My Nest Is Best , P.D. Eastman

All the Birds of North America American Bird Conservatory's Field Guide

Parables from Nature , Mrs. Alfred Gatty

The Burgess Bird Book for Children (free on Kindle), Thornton Burgess

Here is a fun app for your iPhone or iPad- Chirp! Bird Songs  -they have different versions for different parts of the world.  Great app!  We were outside today & the kids heard a bird chirping.   They immediately went to get the iPad to figure out what it was- it was a Chickadee...

Now get outside & enjoy your Spring weather- whatever it may be!
