After Halloween Candy Learning Activities

I have some fun after Halloween candy learning activities to share with you.

I thought that we would take advantage of all of the candy today in our learning.  My kids absolutely L.O.V.E.D. this.  These activities are great for kids of all ages, but will best teach elementary-aged kids.

Halloween Candy Learning Activities:

I gave my kids a clipboard to keep track of all of the measurements we did.

Sorting and Weighing Halloween Candy:

First, we sorted our candy into chocolates and fruities.  Then we weighed each pile with our bucket balance scale to see which weighed more.  The chocolates won!  You could sort in different ways and try a few different options here.

Measuring Candy Length:

Next we laid the piles (fruity candy & chocolate candy) out into 2 straight lines to see which type of Halloween candy made a longer line.  We measured each row and wrote down the number of inches of each.  Use a measuring tape to accomplish this task.

Also we measured each individual candy o see which one is the longest overall.

Halloween Candy Counting & Finding the Difference:

The next Halloween candy learning activity we did was to count each row, see which had the greater number and find the difference between the two.  We wrote them down to compare. You could make bar graphs, too!

Halloween Candy Fractions:

After playing around with all of the wrapped Halloween candies we opened a few and played with them individually.  We cut up Reeses Peanut Butter cups to practice fractions.  They had to share 2/8 with me.  Could they figure that out?  :).   (I always call this the mom tax!).

How else can we divide up the individual Halloween candies to practice fractions?

Halloween Candy Color Sorting:

We dumped out all the skittles packs and graphed the number of each color.  First- we each made a guess about which color would have the most.  We were all wrong… green surprised us all!

My kids were literally begging for more math.  How do you like that?
